At the time of the enclosure in Upton Grove farm was one of the main farms in Tetbury Upton with over 200 acres.
1851 Nathaniel Frederick Ellison [1830-1867] 220acres employing 4 labourers. 1866 Ellison lived at Elmestree. William Sealy [1817-1871 ] was the farm bailiff in 1851 and 1861. By 1871 William had returned to his birthplace and was farming 14 acres and emplying two men.
1867-1868 Richard H Carter
1871 census lists Richard Henry Carter [b.1841] as a Landowner & farmer of 280 acres employing 9 men, 4 women and 3 boys. By 1881 he was in Cradley, HEF as a land, dividend and house owner. One child born in Upton, the next was 8 years old born WOR indicating that the family left Tetbury between 1881 and 1883.
A valuation of the farm between R H Carter Esq and Messrs John & Robert Butler, taken by Henry Holborow of Willesley on 23/9/1871. listed the following as part of the estate:
young seeds in Ferns Leaze swedes in six acres turnips in fourteen acres mangold in barn ground twenty acres ready for wheat mustard after cabbage after vetches ploughed for wheat in star ground wheat straw off 36 acres
The value was £335 6s 6d
I believe that the Robert and John Butler are the family of butchers that lived in the town. In the 1881 census Robert is listed as butcher and farmer, with his residence as Upton.
