INQUEST REPORT Gloucester Journal 7th April 1883

Singular fatality - Mr A J M Bell, coroner, called together a jury at Stroud Hospital on Saturday to inquire into the circumstances connected with the death of Mr George Morse 37yrs of age of Horsley near Nailsworth who accidentally shot himself in a very singular manner on Thursday and died at the hospital where he was taken on Friday morning. A Farmiloe a farm labourer working for John Fowler of Horsley stated that the deceased was a fellow workman and that on Thursday deceased was digging in his allotment. He had been - about using guns. At half past five? - - - running round the yard after a fox trying to strike him with the barrel of a gun which he had in his hand. Witness ran towards him and when he got within two or three yards of him he - the report? Of a gun and the fox ran through the gate. He COULD not see deceased but now smoke as from a gun?. Deceased called out and witness went to him and found him lying on the ground bleeding. Morse said Allen I'm a dead man. The barrel was lying on the ground beside him without the - it was a single barrel. Witness got a trap and took him to Tiltups end to Mr Wells.. This would be about an hour and a half after Morse was shot b- his- was out with the trap and did not come back for some time. Mr Wells did not do anything to deceased but advised his removal to the hospital. They took him there and he was admitted about eight in the evening. Deceased's wife had bound up the wound with some rags. Witness found the stock of the gun in the shed. He left the barrel on the ground and had not seen it since. Deceased was shot in the thigh between the legs Edward Smart, shepherd to Mr Fowler and Charles Evans labourer also gave evidence as to the time and place where the accident occurred. Alice Morse, wife of the deceased said her husband had no gun licence. Mr R D - house surgeon at the hospital decreed that the deceased was admitted to the hospital on Thursday night with a gunshot wound on the inner part of the thigh about five inches deep. The surrounding parts were - as though the gun had been discharged close to him. He said he had kicked the gun as he was priming it in the yard. He died early next morning. The coroner said it was clear the fatality was due to deceased's own folly. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and --- to the widow.
