RESEARCH - my personal experience

I began my own family research 25 years ago well before the internet age! Unable to travel far with a young family and a time living overseas it was a triumph gaining one piece of information such as a certificate or census printout once every six months - how those documents were poured over and inspected for weeks to follow.

My career has been spent working in reference and local study libraries, and laterly researching Tetbury, hence this website. The Tetbury research was begun and developed when my husbands family tree couldn’t be traced any further back, so to fill my hours I started collating data from the census onto a huge database which now stands at over 25,000 individuals for the period 1780-1911.

I am currently studying with the IHGS for the Certificate of Genealogy, Higher Certificate and hopefully will eventually gain the Diploma.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS:

“... I was particularly happy to see the criminal record of WH. My late father always maintained that a family member had been transported for sheep stealing. I thought it was one of his tall tales but now it it proves he had the basis of the story correct. I feel duty bound to pass the story on to my children. The background information you included was very illuminating in rounding out the lives of my ancestors.”RH Wales Feb 2009

“I am still reading the material that you sent me.  I'm too excited to be able to read it all properly but have got the gist.  I am absolutely thrilled, thank you!” “Thank you so much for the work that you have done, you have really struck gold for me!  I have been too giddy to do anything remotely sensible today, I've just gone around with a silly grin on my face” EG Sept 2011

“Thank you for your wonderful and prompt service. I've received all the documents.” BD Australia May 2008

“Thank you for sending the first batch of information it's very much appreciated.” SC June 2010

“Thank-you so much for your report on the McCabe and Martin Families. It is just fantastic as I would never be able to find all of that info here or over in England.” MC New Zealand Oct 2010

HOW MUCH, HOW LONG - and other important questions

How much depends on you, and your budget.

My charges are £15 per hour plus expenses. Expenses - not a nice word but this includes any certificates ordered and at the moment are the only additional expenses you may face. I don’t charge travel or copying but on your invoice these will be marked down as an extra - this is purely so that I can keep an eye on what expenses currently are being charged by different organisations.

Once you have decided how much you can afford focus on the most important facts that you want out of your research request.

If you decide that your maximum is £30, ie 2 hours, it is best to focus on the straight forward parish records and census. If you then want to add to this information at a later date, when you can afford another couple of hours perhaps, there are many other resources available. For example Tetbury has many school log books which give the addresses, fathers name and occupation, ages and even dates of birth of their pupils, as well as the sometimes rude comments, which I am sure todays teachers are not allowed to make about their pupils. Parish rate books can fill in gaps between census, trade directories, newspapers, military records can all add valuable information. The list is endless.

For more information please email me at  research<at>tetburyfamilies<dot>co<dot>uk

Please note that the response to your research query will come from a Tiscali email address. Make sure that your spam filter does not class Tiscali as a spam address. BT internet does seem to reject tiscali so if you do not get a response within 48 hours please email again and I will respond from an alternative email account.

MY CONTRACT WITH YOU - what you can expect and what I expect

I require a deposit of £15 before any work is started. Once this is received I will plan when I will do the work and if there is any more information I need from you to enable the work to be carried out professionally and efficiently.

I will undertake the work within a reasonable period of time. Sometimes there may be a delay due to the particular Archives or Library being closed, like at Christmas and New Year. I will keep you informed if there is a delay.

To enable an efficient plan of work I need as much information from you as possible. If you already hold GRO certificates for a family member and they figure in the research to be undertaken, I need all the data on there. If you already have parish register entries, again, all the data ALONG with the source ie transcript, index, IGI or actual register entry. This prevents work being duplicated and lets me have all the necessary evidence to complete the task accurately.

I am compiling pages to show some examples of the types of documents I handle at the archives, and how they can be useful in research. First steps shows the resources that I use at home prior to a visit to any archives, which saves me time, and you money. Before I even begin charging I will have probably done a few hours, what I term background and familiarisation work to enable an efficient day spent hands on with the archive material needed to complete some of your family history.

If you decide to go ahead please go here next.
