Persis LAMB
Persis, daughter of Edmund Thomas Lamb, is probably the best known of the photographers operating in Tetbury. Edmund was originally a tiler and plasterer but by 1871 had left Tetbury for Cambridgeshire and work as a photographers assistant. He married, had three daughters and became a photographer in his own right. His wife died between 1881-1891, and sometime between 1891 and 1901 he and Persis moved to Tetbury. He was a photographer with Persis as his photographers assistant.
The first trade directory listing appears in 1897 with premises on Church Street ‘photographer and fancy repository’. Sometime between 1914 and 1923 Persis took over the business being the ‘photographer’. The following extract describes her business -“undertakes outdoor work as required, such as groups, wedding, garden, tennis and family parties, and every description of high class work is turned out by the modern processes such as sepia, platinotype, carbon, mezzotint and silver print and the like, being worked in with equal facility, and in all styles and sizes produced. Another department is devoted to stationery and fancy good, including photo frames, and many useful articles for presents. Agencies are held for the famous Goss china and Perth Dye Works. Ensign films and amateurs' work supplies undertaken.” [Beautiful Britain, news and reviews]
