FISHMONGERS

1835   Francis Hiorns was listed in a bankruptcy file as fishmonger and poulterer amongst other things. I can find no more information about him.

1841   John Barrett, living on Bath Bridge, had his occupation listed as Fishmonger. Within six years he was a bailiff. He appears in the trade directories as fishmonger and fruiterer 1840-1844, no shop premises listed.

1841   James Clift, living on Market Place, listed as a Fishmonger. He was listed in trade directories at Market Place 1856, Silver Street 1859-63 and Church Street 1870-74. He was born in Nailsworth c.1817.

1856   Thomas Mitchell, from Laycock, WIL, is listed as a fishmonger on Market Place. In the 1859 directory he is listed as at Church Lane but by 1863 back on Market Place. It would appear that his brother in law, Henry Plaister either bought the fishmonger side of Thomas's grocery business or ran it on his behalf. From this time onwards all entries for Thomas show him as a grocer only.

1867   Henry Plaister of Harper Street was listed as a Fishmonger. His first listing as such was on the 1861 census having formerly being an ag lab. His wife Jane [Mitchell] was sister to Thomas Mitchell, a fishmonger and grocer. Henry appears in trade directories 1867 Harper Street, 1885 Church Street and 1889 Market Place. He had retired by 1901.

1891   Joseph C Williams, living on Market Place is listed as a Fishmonger. He was born in Newport, MON c.1866. The trade directories list him as Joseph Edgar Williams, Market Place 1894-1924/5. In the 1900 directory he is listed as T Williams, although I suspect that this is a clerical error, and the subtext of the entry has him advertising 'fresh fish daily'.

1894   John Kendall listed as a Fishmonger on Chipping Street.

1901   John J Dafler, from Bristol was listed as a Fishmonger. He was living on The Knapp.

1911   Albert Cecil Wheeler, living at the White Hart, aged 21, is listed as a fishmonger.

1924   D. Bristow listed as Fishmonger on Silver Street

1933   C. Smith listed as Fishmonger on Church Street

1933-38   MacFisheries listed at 5 Market Place
