CHIPPING STREET

Chipping Street was known as Chipping Lane as late as 1860. By 1876 it was listed in a directory as Street.

In the 1594 Town Survey entries 24-29 are East side Chypping Croft Lane, listing Robert Hibert [White Hart], Francis Knight, Thomas Escourt [in tenure of John -garde], James Thomas [Swan, tenement proper], Walter Ball, Richard Aldridge [smythe forge]

In 1781 Chipping Lane was widened - see Chipping Steps for more detail.

A trade directory of 1822 lists a boot maker, druggist and ironmonger, and in 1876 a grocer, blacksmith and carpenter.

The 1860 rates list 6 houses and one bank premises. Owners were Banking Company, Cowley and Rich.
